Questions surrounding Florida State head coach Mike Norvell's future continue to grow, but the financial terms of his contract could make a coaching change extremely costly for the Seminoles.

Norvell's buyout is $48 million if Florida State dismisses him after this week, according to Front Office Sports. That figure would rank as the third-largest coaching buyout in college football history, behind the $76.8 million paid to Jimbo Fisher by Texas A&M and the $54 million owed to Brian Kelly by LSU. If Norvell is fired after the 2026 season, his buyout would fall to $45.6 million.

The massive figure is tied to the eight-year extension Norvell signed in February 2024. The agreement is worth more than $84 million and keeps him under contract through the 2031 season. Under the terms of the deal, Norvell is owed 85% of his remaining salary if the Seminoles move on from him. His 2026 base salary is $10.3 million, with that amount scheduled to rise by $150,000 annually through the final year of the contract. The agreement also contains incentives tied to conference championships, College Football Playoff achievements and academic performance.

The commitment followed Norvell's impressive 2023 campaign, after he led Florida State to the best season of his tenure. The Seminoles finished the regular season 12-0, won the ACC championship and finished 13-1 overall. Norvell was also named National Coach of the Year.

Since then, however, Florida State has been unable to maintain that level. The Seminoles went 2-10 in 2024 and 5-7 in 2025, combining for a 7-17 record across those two seasons without a bowl appearance. Since winning the ACC in 2023, Norvell is 8-18 overall and 3-15 in conference play.

The pressure has intensified after Florida State's ACC opener against SMU two weeks ago ended in another loss, making it the third consecutive year the Seminoles dropped their conference opener. Boos were heard throughout Doak Campbell Stadium during the game.

The Seminoles now travel to face No. 10 Alabama on Saturday as an 18.5-point underdog. It is the second-largest spread against a Norvell-led Florida State team, behind the 26-point line against Notre Dame in 2024, when the Seminoles lost 52-3.

The timing has also led to speculation after athletic director Michael Alford was fired Monday. President Richard McCullough praised Norvell's character when asked about the connection between Alford's dismissal and the coach's position but did not directly address Norvell’s job security.
