With the Tennessee football team handing the Kentucky Wildcats a loss on Saturday, 34-6, it was a massive bounce back after the 27-24 loss last weekend to the South Carolina Gamecocks. As the Tennessee football program rocked their Dark Mode jerseys for the contest, head coach Josh Heupel would shout out a specific unit during his post-game press conference.

In his introduction before taking questions from the media, Heupel would shout out the “phenomenal environment” inside Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee. Heupel would then commend the Volunteers' defense for holding Kentucky to six points, calling the effort “elite.”

“Phenomenal environment. Knew it would be. Dark Mode, Homecoming. Our fans were tremendous tonight. And a great environment that they create for us. Proud of the way that we competed,” Heupel said, according to The Next Round on X, formerly Twitter. “Turnovers were going to be big. Defensively, we forced couple and didn’t give it up offensively. That’s been a huge part of our opponent’s success this year. And I thought defensively, elite performance ultimately, what you end up giving up on the scoreboard. Tremendous effort. There was a huge part of the game early was just red-zone defense. Did a great job of forcing a couple of kicks.”

Heupel would continue talking about the Tennessee football's performance, as the offense scored in every quarter of the contest, including a 21-point fourth quarter. As for the defense, the Volunteers only allowed six points in the second quarter, stifling the Wildcats in every other aspect, and even with the productive performance, Heupel still thought there was room for improvement, like the six penalties against them, costing them 60 yards.

“We got to continue to grow in that way,” Heupel continued. “But I thought we missed some things offensively in the first half. But the second-half performance as a football team, I love the way that they went out there and competed in the second half…Enjoy it tonight and move on.”

Heupel and the Tennessee football team look to keep the momentum going into Saturday against Texas A&M.
