After the Magic City Classic, a shooting occurred that resulted in one death and eight injuries, as reported by ESPN.
In comments obtained by WRBC, Mayor Woodfin stated that the initial shooting occurred outside the perimeter of Legion Field and the tailgate area for the Magic City Classic, injuring six individuals. The mayor noted that the second shooting took place less than eight minutes later across from Legion Field, in the Graymont Avenue vicinity, and involved three victims.
Mayor Woodfin revealed that a 17-year-old, who was found in possession of a gun equipped with a Glock conversion switch, is currently in custody under a 48-hour hold. He emphasized that this teenager is not the only suspect and that the investigation remains active.
The Magic City Classic released a statement on Sunday regarding the shooting incidents.
“The Alabama Sports Council, organizers of the Magic City Classic since 2000, extends its deepest condolences to everyone affected by the senseless tragedy that occurred outside of Legion Field property following Saturday’s game.
This act of violence will not define the 85th Magic City Classic or overshadow one of the most successful years in the event’s history. Widely recognized as the most well-attended HBCU football game in the country, this year’s event achieved record sponsorship levels and attracted one of the largest crowds in its history. More than 100,000 spectators lined the streets for one of the best parades in Classic history, while the pep rally, tailgating and countless community events enjoyed record levels of support. These celebrations were held safely and successfully, bringing tens of thousands together to celebrate HBCU tradition, school pride and the Birmingham community.”
The statement also featured a quote from Perren King, who served as executive director of the Classic.
“We stand with Mayor Woodfin in refusing to let fear shake the spirit of our community. Our hearts are with those affected by this tragedy, but we will not allow one senseless act to diminish the legacy, unity and pride that make the Magic City Classic so special. We look forward to the 86th Magic City Classic next October.”
