The Milwaukee Brewers have won the World Series for the first time in their franchise history. Milwaukee defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in five games to capture this championship. For team icons such as Robin Yount, this championship means everything.

Yount spent his entire 20-year career with the Brewers. He was with the team in 1982 when the Brewers represented the American League in the World Series. On Wednesday night, he told reporters just how much this moment meant to him.

“This team made history. They took a lot of weight off a lot of people’s shoulders, I can tell you that,” Yount said, via Adam McCalvy of MLB.com.

Yount was an absolute star for the Brewers during his playing days. The 20-year-old veteran is a two-time American League MVP. In fact, his first MVP came in 1982 when Milwaukee won its first pennant. The Brewers lost in seven games to the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series that season.

Yount still holds many franchise records as well. No player in Milwaukee history has played more games, recorded more hits, or driven in more runs. Only Ryan Braun has hit more home runs than the Hall of Famer while wearing a Brewers jersey.

1982 did not go the way Milwaukee wanted. It took them 44 years and a switch to the National League to return to the Fall Classic. On Wednesday night, though, they cemented themselves as World Series champions. The wait was long, but for Yount and other franchise icons, it has to feel special.
