Chase Burns broke out as the ace of the Cincinnati Reds pitching staff. Burns was given a massive contract extension with the stellar play and also named an All-Star for the first time.

Now, the stellar season is over for Burns, according to ESPN.

Burns has been placed on the 15-day IL due to a groin strain, officially ending his season.

“After his start [Friday], he just came in … and he felt the right groin a little bit,” Reds manager Terry Francona said. “So again, we're being very cautious.”

Burns, who pitched just 43.1 innings in his rookie year, was over 150 innings this season. The Reds had been limiting his innings as of late, with him pitching just three innings in each of his last three games.

“He did a really, really good job,” Francona said. “I think it makes sense to not push him for [another] three-inning start. We got him to a point where next year, however he pitches, it's not going to be determined by, ‘Oh, we've got to be careful with this.' So that's a really good thing.”

Burns finishes the year at 15-3 with a 2.86 ERA and 185 strikeouts. While he is satisfied with his season, it was not the ending he was hoping for.

“Not how I wanted it to end,” Burns said. “Both groins kind of got upset this year. Kind of frustrating. Happy with the way the season went, just the growth and experience. Ready to get back next year. I'm excited.”

The Reds are 72-83 on the season, which places them last in the NL Central. The team has also been eliminated from playoff contention.
