It was a tumultuous offseason for the Detroit Red Wings. Then-captain Dylan Larkin requested a trade from the team and later was stripped of his captaincy. Meanwhile, the team still does not have a GM after moving on from Steve Yzerman in that role. Adding to the offseason dysfunction, Simon Edvinsson still does not have a new contract with the club.

Now, as the Red Wings' season is just days away from starting, Edvinsson is making his next career move, per Andreas Johnsson.

“Simon Edvinsson is back in Sweden. Training with Frölunda on Wednesday,” Johnsson posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Edvinsson began his career with the Frölunda J20 team in the 2019-20 season, before moving to the senior SHL squad midway through the 2020-21 campaign. He would stay with the team even after being drafted sixth overall by the Red Wings in the 2021 NHL Draft. Edvinsson would move to the NHL in 2022-23, where he has played in 175 games with the Wings, scoring 19 goals and adding 41 assists.

Edvinsson just completed the final year of his entry-level contract, leaving him a restricted free agent. The rights to the 23-year-old are still owned by the Red Wings, and without a contract, he is not able to practice or play for the team. He did show up to training camp and continued to work despite not having a contract. In order to keep in shape, he is back training with Frölunda.

The clock is ticking for the Red Wings to get a deal done with Edvinsson. The team opens the season on Friday night against the New York Rangers. Further, if a contract is not signed by December 1, he is not allowed to play in the NHL for the rest of the season. The team retains his rights heading into the next offseason as well.
