The Boston Red Sox have adjusted their weekend series against the Chicago Cubs because of the weather forecast, moving Sunday’s game into a split doubleheader Friday at Fenway Park.
The change gives both clubs a better chance to complete the series before heavier rain and wind arrive later in the weekend. Boston will now play Friday at 1:05 p.m. ET. and 6:05 p.m. ET., while Saturday’s 7:15 p.m. game remains scheduled for now. Tickets for the originally scheduled games remain valid at the new times.
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported the finalized change Wednesday on X, formerly Twitter, after MLB and both teams worked through weather contingencies.
“The Boston Red Sox announce that there will be a split doubleheader Friday against the Chicago Cubs with no game Sunday.”
Nightengale followed up with another update to the platform, noting that Saturday’s game could still be adjusted if the forecast worsens shortly after.

The schedule matters because the regular season ends Sunday and the Wild Card Series begins Tuesday. Any makeup game pushed to Monday would cost both clubs their only scheduled off day before the postseason.
The Red Sox have already clinched a playoff berth, while Chicago entered Wednesday tied with the Philadelphia Phillies and San Diego Padres for the three National League wild-card spots. Seeding and first-round home-field position remain at stake for the Cubs.
As of Wednesday evening, Friday’s split doubleheader is official and Sunday is clear. Saturday remains the only unresolved part of the weekend schedule as MLB continues monitoring the expected storm in Boston.
