Rookie Dylan Garand has started every one of the New York Rangers' games since star Igor Shesterkin went down with a season-ending injury — but he'll get a break on Monday night.

The 38-year-old James Reimer, who signed a one-year, $850,000 contract Sunday, will be between the pipes when the Blueshirts welcome the Los Angeles Kings to Madison Square Garden.

It'll be Reimer's 17th National Hockey League season after spending last year with the Ottawa Senators.

“I don't need to play, I want to play,” Reimer told NHL.com's Dan Rosen after the morning skate. “I love playing this game, so if the situation is right and it works for my family and whatnot, then it's something you stay ready for and you make it happen. So, that's kind of my mindset.”

Reimer gives New York an experienced option to help ease Garand's workload. The 24-year-old has played a ton of hockey, and head coach Mike Sullivan acknowledged the demands of that role.

“We're asking a lot of Dylan,” the bench boss said. “He just had [eight] starts in a row. I think there's a physical challenge to it, but there's also a mental challenge to it.”

Garand is 4-4-1 with a .900 save percentage and a 2.65 goals-against average in 2026-27.

Reimer originally joined the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack on a professional tryout earlier this month. He showed no signs of rust in his first professional game since April, posting a 35-save shutout against the Providence Bruins on Friday.

Two days later, he had an NHL contract.

“He has a body of work in the League, has proven to be a very competent goalie and given the circumstance that we're in, I think (general manager Chris Drury) felt like he could give us some help in in that regard,” Sullivan added.

The Rangers will become the ninth NHL team Reimer has played for, tying the goaltending record held by Cam Talbot, who is currently with the Columbus Blue Jackets, per Rosen.

Overall, Reimer is 232-191-67 with a 2.88 GAA, .909 save percentage and 32 shutouts in 539 regular-season games split between the Toronto Maple Leafs, San Jose Sharks, Florida Panthers, Carolina Hurricanes, Detroit Red Wings, Anaheim Ducks, Buffalo Sabres and Senators.

He'll get a favorable matchup against a Kings team that is 2-5-2 and averaging just 2.33 goals per game — 28th in the NHL.
