The Oakland Raiders completed a 38-33 comeback against the New York Jets to snap their four-game losing skid. One notable change made by Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak was that rookie Mike Washington Jr. was in the backfield with Kirk Cousins instead of Ashton Jeanty, as last year's No. 6 pick had his touches cut amid his recent struggles running the ball.
However, Jeanty remains happy because he got just what he wanted, which was a Raiders win.
“We won. It doesn't matter how I feel about how [many] times I get the ball. Whatever it takes for the team to win, I just want to win. That's all,” Jeanty said, per ESPN's Ryan McFadden.
Washington Jr. finished with 83 yards on 25 carries against the Jets in his first game with such a heavy workload. Meanwhile, Jeanty was limited to just two carries for nine yards. However, he was second on the team with 64 receiving yards, which included a 45-yard catch.
After a fine rookie campaign where he had 975 rushing yards and five touchdowns in 17 games, Jeanty is going through a sophomore slump. Through seven games, he has only 328 rushing yards (3.1 yards per carry) with one touchdown. He has also been dealing with some injury concerns, which might have impacted his play.
Article Continues BelowOn the plus side, though, he has markedly improved in the passing game. He already has 34 catches for 312 yards and three touchdowns and is on pace to surpass his totals from last year.
While the Raiders see what they have with Washington Jr. as a workhorse back, Jeanty will likely be spending more time as a receiving back. But given the improvement he's shown, he could still contribute to the team in that way.
