Curiosity and anticipation for clarity loomed heavily during the Detroit Pistons NBA Media Day. As the 2026-27 season approaches, one of the franchise's biggest questions is the contract extension talks between the Pistons and restricted free agent center Jalen Duren.
After turning down the Pistons' latest five-year, $200-million offer, Duren did not attend media day to answer questions. Media members still fielded questions about the current state of the contract discussions. Pistons' President of Basketball Operations, Trajan Langdon, opened up about where things stand between the Pistons and their All-Star center.
“We have not come to an agreement with Jalen Duren up to this point. He has until Thursday to make a decision. We will be excited to have him in regardless of whatever decision he does make,” Langdon stated. “He was a huge reason for our success the last two seasons. He had a tremendous season individually last year as well. We believe he will do the same thing this upcoming year. We're excited to have him back when he gets back. We will integrate him, and he's going to have a fantastic season regardless of his decision.”
ESPN reports have disclosed that Duren has turned down multiple offers from Detroit due to “disrespect”. A clause in the contract was reportedly entered for Duren to maintain a specific weight during the season. There was also a reported issue between Duren and the Pistons regarding the speed at which they handled the contract talks with forward Ausar Thompson.
Langdon did not specifically address the terms of the negotiations. While keeping those details secret, he did declare that he will keep the matters between Duren and the Pistons as professional as possible.
“I won't let anybody's feelings get in the way of decisions that I make professionally. So any reports regarding that are meaningless to me,” Langdon said.
This contract dispute is a new matter for Langdon within the Pistons' roster. However, he did indicate he dealt with a similar situation during his time with the New Orleans Pelicans. He refused to disclose which player he was referring to but he elaborated that the experience had similarities to the current obstacles with Duren.

Jalen Duren still has support within the franchise
The popular topic of Duren's ongoing contract discussions also reached other parts of the team. While the unsigned deal could be problematic with how the team moves currently, the Pistons provided support and solidarity while Duren and the front office work toward an agreement.
Head coach J.B. Bickerstaff shared the positive admiration he has for Duren and what he means to the team. He states the team remains hopeful that he is able to return soon to help continue the momentum Detroit has put together.
“He knows how I feel about him and I've continue to let him know how I feel about him. I love J.D. and how he feels about being a member of the Pistons. It's positive,” Bickerstaff explained. “He's a huge part of what we do, he's a huge of part of where we are right now and the steps we've taken to get there. It's all love from our standpoint and we look forward to having him back.”
Duren was half of one of the most dangerous NBA duos last year with All-NBA point guard Cade Cunningham. Their chemistry on the floor offensively was a major reason behind Duren's emergence as an All-Star center and an All-NBA player in 2025-26. Cunningham spoke highly about his support for Duren as well during media day. He told the media there is no disappointment on his end as a player because he understands the position that he is in.
