The offseason has been a weird one for the Detroit Pistons, particularly when it comes to Jalen Duren contract talks. Last season, the fourth-year center made the All-Star Game for the first time after averaging 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds. The Pistons earned the one-seed in the Eastern Conference, too.
However, Duren struggled mightily in the playoffs, which has led to awkward contract extension negotiations this offseason. The Memphis product and his camp think he deserves the max, or something close to it, while the Pistons have been hesitant to offer a $200 million deal.
NBA training camp is just days away, and the big man who entered the offseason as the best free agent available remains unsigned. Reports even suggest he could play one year under the qualifying offer and then bolt in free agency come next year. Perhaps the weirdest piece of information to come out of Duren's contract talks is that the Pistons want to include weight clauses in his deal.
Article Continues BelowDuren is a 250-pound freak of nature who has been ripped since before his NBA career started, and few would have guessed that weight concerns were something the Pistons were thinking about. While the exact specifications of the weight clauses/incentives that Detroit wants are unknown, it shows a clear rift between the Pistons and their star center, one that is seemingly becoming less repairable as training camp approaches.
The Athletic reported that Detroit's insistence on weight clauses came as a surprise to Duren and his camp, but that the Pistons felt like that played a part in Duren's postseason struggles.
With the regular season just around the corner, and an Oct. 1 deadline for Duren to decide if he'll play on the qualifying offer or not, a contract decision will surely be made soon.
