Coach Matt Campbell's Penn State football team is 3-0 after a blowout 55-13 win over the Buffalo Bulls at WestShore Home Field at Beaver Stadium. The game gave Penn State a chance to pick up frustrated offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser with over 300 rushing yards on the day.
After the game, the focus turned to the health of coach Campbell's team including center Brock Riker and tight end Andrew Rappleyea, who both left the game with injuries on Saturday. Riker played the first two series before he was taken out. The two injuries didn't sound serious according to Campbell's postgame comments.
âÂÂBoth those guys are just kinda dinged up,â Cambpell said. âÂÂWe didn't really know exactly where we'd be with Brock going into the game, we wanted to at least kinda get him out there and it still didn't feel like he was at 100 percent, and I just didn't feel like it was the right situation to leave him in the game.
âÂÂPlus I think the other thing is, (backup) Vaea's (Ikakoula) done a really good job, I think he was one of the highlights of today, I thought he played outstanding, when you've got two guys who can play it's huge, but obviously Brock is really, really special to this team.âÂÂ
Article Continues BelowA similar situation happened in regards to Rappleyea, Campbell added.
âÂÂReally same thing with Rapp. Rapp coulda went back into the football game, you know by the time we were wrapping everything up I just didn't feel like that was the right situation for the benefit of the football team.âÂÂ
Campbell knows as well as anyone the toll that comes with battling in the trenches, as does star pass rusher Max Granville, who is out for the season. Week 4's Big Ten opener against Wisconsin will bring a whole new level of physicality as Campbell's team prepares for what should be a knockdown, drag-out affair in Happy Valley on September 26.
