The Green Bay Packers walked away with a 17-14 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 4, but head coach Matt LaFleur was far from pleased with the performance, as his team once again dealt with ball-security issues — something he made clear cannot continue.
Green Bay committed two turnovers in the final period, much to LaFleur’s displeasure. His solution to the problem? A rather ruthless one.
“I think a great teacher's the bench,” said LaFleur. “If guys don't start holding onto the ball, they’re gonna be sitting on the bench.”
The warning came after the Packers wasted two chances to increase their three-point advantage. MarShawn Lloyd fumbled after a 16-yard reception, although the ball rolled out of bounds. Three plays later, Kaleb Johnson fumbled on first-and-goal from the Buccaneers 3-yard line, with Tykee Smith forcing the turnover and A'Shawn Robinson recovering at the 4.
Instead of potentially building a two-score lead, Green Bay turned the ball over. The offense then failed to score on the ensuing possession.
The Packers now lead the NFL in fumbles this season. Their ball-security problems are part of a broader discipline issue, as Green Bay also has the league's most drops and penalties. Green Bay was flagged 10 times against Tampa Bay.
Article Continues BelowThe fumbles were particularly concerning given the Packers' running-back situation. Josh Jacobs remains on the commissioner's exempt list, while Chris Brooks exited Sunday's game with an ankle injury.
Green Bay also gave the Buccaneers another opportunity when Jacob Parrish intercepted Jordan Love's pass at Tampa Bay's 26-yard line late in the fourth quarter. The Buccaneers could not complete the comeback, as undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels threw incomplete on fourth down from the the Packers 47.
Green Bay's defense ultimately preserved the victory. Tampa Bay, playing without Baker Mayfield because of a dislocated thumb, started Daniels, who threw two interceptions that led to 10 Packers points.
Love finished the game with two touchdown passes, including scores to Matthew Golden and Tucker Kraft. Green Bay also benefited from a 58-yard Trey Smack field goal following Edgerrin Cooper's 18-yard interception return.
Now 2-2 following the win, the Packers will face the Chicago Bears next Sunday.
