With the playoffs inching closer, the Baltimore Orioles are making changes not just on the field, but in the front office.

On Friday, Britt Ghiroli of The Athletic reported that assistant GM Sig Mejdal won't be serving in the analytics department any longer. Instead, he will take the reins in research on technologies and practices in baseball operations.

Nevertheless, Mejdal will hold onto the title of assistant GM.

Mejdal has been the Orioles' assistant GM since November 2018. He brought with him an extensive background in analytics as a former NASA engineer and quantitative analyst.

When he arrived, the Orioles were a struggling franchise. They lost 115 games in 2018. From there, the Orioles had a few more 100+ loss seasons before turning things around.

In 2022, Baltimore finished 4th in the American League East Division at 83-79. The next year, they won the division title with a 101-61 record.

Ultimately, the Orioles were swept in the ALDS by the eventual champion Texas Rangers.

In 2024, Baltimore made it back to the postseason but was swept by the Kansas City Royals in the American League Wild Card series.

Last year, Baltimore finished last at 75-87 and missed the postseason. Now, they are 75-78, last in the AL East, but can still vy for a playoff spot.

However, with 9 games left, it will be challenging.

Nevertheless, thanks to Mejdal's eye for analytical detail and mastery of data tools, Baltimore is back to being an organization worthy of being in the conversation about October.

The addition of Pete Alonso is a bonus.
