An Ole Miss student is blasting former Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin ahead of the team's highly anticipated Saturday matchup against LSU. This comes after Kiffin made comments about the âÂÂracist historyâ of Mississippi and Ole Miss in an interview with Vanity Fair.
Kiffin said recruiting players to Mississippi was tough because of the region's racial history. As he said that players would say something on my own, something similar to, âÂÂHey, coach, we really like you. But my grandparents arenâÂÂt letting me move to Oxford, Mississippi.âÂÂ
He then compared that to how he believes recruits feel about going to LSU.
âÂÂThat doesnâÂÂt come up when you say Baton Rouge, Louisiana,â Kiffin said. âÂÂParents were sitting here this weekend saying the campusâ diversity feels so great: âÂÂIt feels like thereâÂÂs no segregation. And we want that for our kid because thatâÂÂs the real world.âÂÂâÂÂ
Kiffin apologized for the comments in an interview with On3.
âÂÂI really apologize if anybody at Ole Miss or in Mississippi was offended by that,â Kiffin said. âÂÂIn a four-hour interview, I was asked a lot of questions on a lot of things, and Ole Miss has been wonderful to me and to my familyâ¦âÂÂâÂÂI was asked questions about the differences in recruiting, and I said a narrative that we battled there from some out-of-state Black parents and grandparents was not wanting their kid to move to Mississippi. ThatâÂÂs a narrative that coaches have been fighting forever. It wasnâÂÂt calculated by bringing it up.âÂÂ
Article Continues BelowIn an interview with The Athletic, freshman student Isaiah Sanders weighed in on the comments. Sanders is from Prosper, Texas, and is a civil engineering major who received a full academic scholarship to Ole Miss. Per The Athletic, he wants to build a legacy at Ole Miss, given the racial history.
âÂÂI think it was disingenuous. I donâÂÂt recall him saying anything about that while he was tenured here. He was just coaching and making his money and doing his thing. I think it was an effort to hurt Ole Miss.âÂÂ
Sanders then alleged that Kiffin was being hypocritical, given the SEC's history of integration. The Athletic reports that Ole Miss was one of the last three SEC schools to integrate alongside Georgia and LSU.
âÂÂThe LSU Tigers name, thatâÂÂs based off the name of a Confederate unit, right?â Sanders said. âÂÂSo if Lane is saying these things for virtuous reasons, then letâÂÂs be 100 percent honest with everything.âÂÂ
