The Oklahoma football team suffered a scathing 42-25 loss to South Carolina, which resulted in the firing of offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle. But in NFL great Jason Witten's first game as offensive play-caller, the Sooners bounced back to beat Florida, 23-7.

Sooners head coach Brent Venables appreciated that his team showed some pride by responding after such a tough loss, particularly on the defensive end.

“After the blistering we took last week, to see our guys respond… I value that more than anything,” Venables said, per Brandon Drumm.

Oklahoma had a tough time against South Carolina star LaNorris Sellers as he led the Gamecocks to 521 total yards of offense. However, they had a much easier time against Florida quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. The Sooners defense limited the Gators to just 203 total yards on offense and picked off Jones twice.

Meanwhile, the Oklahoma offense performed reasonably well in Witten's play-calling debut. Quarterback John Mateer had 207 yards and two touchdowns, and he also rushed for a season-high 56 yards.

Florida has been having some major offensive issues over the last few weeks, so it's important to take the Oklahoma defense's success against them with a grain of salt. Nevertheless, Venables can take heart in the fact that he has not lost the locker room yet.

Venables will be hoping the Florida defensive performance doesn't turn out to be a fluke when the Sooners take on Ole Miss next week. The Rebels are coming off their own disastrous offensive performance in their crushing 42-7 loss to Georgia.
