Robert Griffin III has seen enough from the Utah Utes. After Utah held off BYU 28-20 in the Holy War on Saturday at Rice-Eccles Stadium, the former Heisman Trophy winner made a bold case for the Utes.

“Utah should be the #1 team in the country,” Griffin wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

The Utes certainly have the résumé to back it up. Saturday’s win improved Utah to 9-0, marking the program’s first 9-0 start since 2008. The Utes also extended their winning streak to 15 games, the longest active run in the country.

Griffin’s take came on a chaotic night at the top of the College Football Playoff rankings. Top-ranked Miami suffered its first loss of the season, falling 31-24 to Notre Dame in South Bend.

Georgia, the other team ranked ahead of the Utes, took care of business with a 42-7 rout of Ole Miss, but Utah, which entered the weekend at No. 3, still has an unblemished record to point to.

The Utes did not make it easy on themselves against their rivals, though. Utah jumped out to a 14-0 lead before BYU clawed its way back into the game. Quarterback Devon Dampier steadied the ship, completing 14 of 26 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns, both to Braden Pegan. He was just as dangerous with his legs, rushing 20 times for 89 yards and two more scores.

Utah’s defense came up big as well. The Utes did not record a sack, but they kept BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier under pressure and picked him off four times. Nate Ritchie sealed the win with an interception in the end zone with two seconds left.

The victory carried extra weight for Utah, which had dropped three straight games to BYU in the rivalry. It also came in the first Holy War in which both teams were ranked in the top 10, with BYU entering at No. 7.

Morgan Scalley has made quite the impression in his first season as head coach since taking over for Kyle Whittingham. Utah now sits firmly in control of its path to a first College Football Playoff berth.

Whether the selection committee agrees with Griffin remains to be seen. The Utes will look to stay perfect when they visit the Arizona Wildcats next Saturday.
