Coach Kyle Whittingham's odyssey with the Michigan Wolverines looks in serious jeopardy after a bland, borderline embarrasding rivalry game loss to Pat Fitzgerald's Michigan State Spartans that came after injury concerns dogged MSU's starting quarterback Alessio Milivojevic. Starting QB Tommy Carr lit up Rutgers and got an endorsement from Whittingham, then proceeded to play some of his worst football of his young career in a 15-6 loss.
After the game, fans demanded Whittingham's ouster as they also debated whether or not high priced offensive coordinator Jason Beck should be fired immediately.
“Kyle Whittingham should do the right thing and resign tomorrow, if not, fire him on Monday,” one fan said.
“I have nothing to say but ‘Fire Kyle Whittingham,' and do it NOW, not later,” another said.
Fans were in a disgusted mood as they continued to vent their frustrations.
“U of M shouldn't even have to fire Kyle Whittingham. He should resign. He is incompetent. You can list to his press conference and infer that he is not mentally equipped to do the job. Nice guy. Also a buffoon,” another said.
Whittingham was asked about potentially firing Beck, and gave a direct answer.
“Not right now. Not as I'm sitting here at this podium, no. But at some point you've got to have results. It's a result-driven business, and it's a bottom line business. I'll evaluate everything after the season and determine what the best course of action is. But not right here, right now.”
Fans were not amused as they continued their common refrain after a humiliating loss to a Spartans team that was just 2-6 coming in.
“Fire Whittingham. Fire Beck,” one said.
Article Continues BelowAnother mentioned that the Wolverines lost to Minnesota for the first time since 1977, went 0-2 to start the Big Ten for the first time since 1967, and were shut out in the first half of three straight home games for the first time since 1934.
“Kyle Whittingham is single-handedly ruining Michigan. FIRE HIM,” they wrote.
Carr finished with 138 yards passing and two interceptions while five-star freshman running back Savion Hiter added a virtually meaningless touchdown at the end of the game to make it 15-6. Michigan's offense is historically bad, and the team isn't much better.
Whittingham must win a few more games to save face before the end of the season or risk getting the axe, perhaps sooner rather than later.
