Oklahoma QB John Mateer reflects on longest fourth quarter of his life

The fourth quarter felt like an eternity for John Mateer and the Oklahoma Sooners during their 27-24 upset win over the No. 1 Texas Longhorns on Saturday evening.

Texas performed very well in the first half, outscoring Oklahoma 17-7 in the opening 30 minutes of regulation. Arch Manning performed solid throughout that frame, but he regressed in a major way in the last 30 minutes.

The Sooners took full advantage, outscoring the Longhorns 20-7 in the second half. They used a pick-6 interception and a game-winning field goal in the dying seconds to stun the top-ranked squad in the country.

Mateer reflected on the win after the game. He explained the experience of the fourth quarter, saying it was the longest quarter he ever felt in his career as he had faith in his kicker to make the field goal.

“Some people could say it and make it true. And there's real power in that. And I knew, I think that was the longest fourth quarter I've ever been a part of. It was awesome. I'll never forget it. But I knew 19 seconds left. Like this was the time, and because we have him, I knew it was going to happen,” Mateer said.
