The Edmonton Oilers are off to a sparkling start in the 2026-27 NHL season. Edmonton is looking to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs once again this year. With the way Connor McDavid has played to this point, making the playoffs would only be the beginning.
McDavid had another standout performance for the Oilers on Tuesday night. He did not score a goal, but he did provide three asissts on the night. One of these assists came on Evan Bouchard's game-winning goal in overtime. Edmonton won the game, and McDavid earned another piece of NHL history as a result.
“Connor McDavid (6-20—26 in 9 GP) required the fewest games in NHL history to reach 20 assists in a single season,” NHL Public Relations posted on social media.
As NHL Public Relations pointed out, the Oilers captain has absolutely dominated. He is currently on pace for 55 goals and 242 points this year. This would shatter the NHL single-season record for points.
Of course, it's way too early to claim that anything like that is going to happen. At the same time, this is a generational start to the season for the Oilers captain. McDavid will be a strong candidate for the Hart Memorial Trophy as NHL MVP once again at this rate.
Article Continues BelowThe Oilers are on a heater in part thanks to McDavid's performance. They are 7-1-1 this season and are only second to the 8-2-0 Vegas Golden Knights in the Pacific Division.
Edmonton has to keep its momentum going. The Oilers cannot afford to squander their captain's historic effort. They will go for their eighth win in 10 games when they take on the Carolina Hurricanes on October 22.
