Victor Wembanyama just had one of the worst games of his professional career during the San Antonio Spurs' 116-104 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on the opening night of the 2026-27 season. Wembanyama did have 12 points, 13 rebounds, and six blocks on the night, so it wasn't all bad. But the Spurs star went just 1-of-13 from the field and missed all four of his three-point attempts on the night, living on the foul line to get his points.
It wasn't until the end of the third quarter that Wembanyama would score his only field goal — a dunk off a lob pass from De'Aaron Fox. All night long, the Spurs star was out of sorts, and the Thunder defense deserves credit for frustrating him to the point of being very passive, especially during the fourth quarter.
At the end of the day, Wembanyama felt as though he was simply overthinking it and didn't have much fun out there on the court as a result — leading to a rough night overall.
“I need to go back to playing the basketball I like. This is not the sport I like, right here. I've got no reason to be hesitant. It's as simple as that. I'm good when I have fun. I was indecisive. I might be overthinking it,” Wembanyama said in his postgame presser, via Oh No He Didn't on X.

Last season, Wembanyama was playing fast and loose, which must have been easier to do considering that the expectations for the Spurs weren't nearly as high as they are heading into this upcoming campaign.
Now, Wembanyama has to get used to dealing with the pressure of being the best player on a team with championship expectations. It does not help as well that the Spurs came so close to winning it all but fumbled multiple opportunities to defeat the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals.
But considering how talented and driven Wembanyama is, expect him to return back to his usual ways in no time — making this opening night disaster a mere aberration.
