Ohio State comes into the game at 5-1 overall. They opened the season against Ball State with a 56-3 win. They then faced Texas on the road in Week 2. Ohio State built a large lead in the game, leading 23-3 at the end of the third quarter. Texas would answer back with an Arch Manning touchdown pass and two Hollywood Smother rushing touchdowns. Ohio State blew the lead to Texas, losing 24-23. Since then, the Buckeyes have been dominant. They took a 59-3 win over Kent State, then a 42-19 win over Illinois. Ohio State then hit the road and beat a 14th-ranked Iowa 31-14 before beating Maryland 45-16 this past weekend.
Meanwhile, Indiana is 6-0 this year. They opened up with a win 52-16 over North Texas, before a 55-0 win over Howard and a 38-0 win over Western Kentucky. Indiana faced their first test of the year against Northwestern. Indiana led 12-0 going into the halftime break, but Northwestern made a game of it. Still, Indiana would go on to win the game 29-23. They would go on to defeat Rutgers on the road 47-15 before visiting Nebraska. The Cornhuskers dominated the game overall, scoring a touchdown in the fourth quarter to lead 17-6. Nick Marsh took over the game, scoring twice in the fourth quarter as Indiana won 20-17.
Ohio State has dominated the series with Indiana overall. They have won 80 times, while Indiana has just 13 wins, and there have been five ties. Ohio State has a beat-up offensive line heading into this game. This leads to two issues for Ohio State. First, they need to establish the running game. The run game has been solid for Ohio State this year. Bo Jackson has run for 460 yards on 89 carries while running for four touchdowns. Meanwhile, Ja'Kobi Jackson has run for 354 yards and six touchdowns on 59 carries. Indiana is seventh in the nation against the run, but if Ohio State can establish the run game, it will open up the pass. It will also help protect Julian Sayin. Indiana is 18th in the nation in sack rate so far this year. Meanwhile, Sayin has been sacked 11 times this year, but when given time, he has been lethal.
On defense, Ohio State has to slow down the passing game of Indiana. Indiana is 107th in the percentage of plays that are pass plays, but is still 43rd in passing and third in yards per pass this year. The pass game for Indiana has been set up from the run. This has led to open passing lanes for Josh Hoover this year. He has completed 88 of 129 passes for 1,364 yards and 17 touchdowns this year. Further, he has not thrown an interception.
For Indiana, it all starts with establishing the ground game. The Indiana offense has been phenomenal this year, sitting 15th in points per game, 21st in yards per game, and first in yards per play this year. The Run game has been great. Indiana is 17th in rushing yards per game this year. This is led by the combination of Turbo Richard and Lee Beebe Jr. Richard has run for 597 yards and five touchdowns on 71 carries. Meanwhile, Beebe has run for 551 yards and four scores. The Indiana run game struggled against Nebraska, which led to the offense struggling in the game. If the run game struggles against a better opponent, Indiana will be in trouble.
On defense, Indiana has to figure out how to stop Jeremiah Smith. It starts with a pass rush. This is led by Tobi Osunsanmi and Stephen Daley. Both players already have five sacks this year, and if they can pressure Sayin, giving him less time to find Smith, it will be a major success for the defense. Meanwhile, Indiana will need to double cover Smith. They have not been great against the pass, sitting 64th in opponent yards per game through the air and 58th in opponent yards per pass. Meanwhile, Smith has been double and triple covered all year. He has still brought in 46 receptions for 916 yards and 11 touchdowns this year.
Ohio State vs. Indiana Prediction and Pick
The Buckeyes opened as a favorite of over four points, but that has dropped to 3.5, still above that critical three-point threshold. The Buckeyes have the best receiver and potentially the best player in the nation in Jeremiah Smith. Still, the offense does not have a lot of punch beyond Smith. If Indiana can slow Smith down, they will be in a perfect situation to take the upset in this one. Further, Indiana's front seven is great and was dominant last time against Ohio State. They held the Buckeyes to 58 yards on the ground last time, allowing them to drop into coverage, making force-feeding Smith the only option. Indiana has a solid defense and running game and will drain the clock in this one. Expect the Hoosiers to keep it close in a low-scoring game.
Final Ohio State vs. Indiana Prediction and Pick: Indiana +3.5 (-112) and Under 51.5 (-120)
