The Green Bay Packers may have found another way to get wide receiver Matthew Golden involved, but Matt LaFleur's latest comments raise an important question: Is putting one of the team's most valuable offensive weapons on punt returns worth the risk?
After Golden erupted for a career-high 123 receiving yards in Green Bay's 31-7 win over the Chicago Bears, LaFleur revealed that the Packers are still weighing their options at punt returner while Skyy Moore recovers from an ankle injury.
According to Ryan Wood, LaFleur said the team is “working through” whether Golden or another player will handle punt returns until Moore returns. The Packers coach also acknowledged Golden's importance to the offense, noting that the decision could become a “week-to-week thing.”
Golden's ability to make plays with the football is undeniable. His performance against Chicago showcased the explosive potential that made him such an exciting addition to Green Bay's offense. Giving him more opportunities in space could create another weapon for LaFleur and quarterback Jordan Love to exploit. He's off to a great sophomore season in the NFL.
However, there is a significant downside to consider.
Article Continues BelowGolden is becoming an increasingly important piece of the Packers' passing attack, and the team has already dealt with its share of injuries this season. Putting a key receiver in a position where he could take additional hits on special teams might not be the smartest long-term decision, especially with Green Bay needing its offensive weapons healthy for the stretch run.
For now, Green Bay should prioritize keeping Golden fresh and available as a receiver.
