On Saturday, the Ohio State football program took its third loss of the season with a blowout home defeat at the hands of the Oregon Ducks. It was an embarrassing performance for the Buckeyes, one that had fans wondering how far the team would tumble in the AP Poll, which was released on Sunday.

“Ohio State dropped to No. 21, its lowest AP ranking since Sept. 21, 2014 (No. 22). The Buckeyes won the national title that year. It is also the Buckeyes’ first November outside the AP Top 20 since 2011, when they were unranked,” reported college football insider Brett McMurphy of On3 Sports on X, formerly Twitter.

It's highly unlikely that the Buckeyes will get a chance to make it 2-2 on national titles when being ranked this low, as the team is now effectively eliminated from the college football playoff race after suffering its third loss of the year. While Ryan Day and company will likely pine for their team to still make it and point to their strength of schedule outside the conference, including most notably a loss to the Texas Longhorns earlier this year, the committee's precedent from last year would not seem to bode well for the Buckeyes.

Meanwhile, Ohio State has largely fallen apart since quarterback Julian Sayin went down with an injury, with the offense going completely dormant in the second half vs Oregon and the defense also falling well short of expectations.

In any case, Ohio State will next hit the field on Saturday for a home game against Northwestern. Kickoff for that game is set for 12:00 pm ET.
