Notre Dame is coming off a bye week after their first loss of the season. They fell to BYU 28-24 in a game filled with back-and-forths and a controversial ending. Head coach Marcus Freeman is still talking about the ending to the BYU and Notre Dame game.

In the game, CJ Carr passed for 261 yards but did not have a passing touchdown. Meanwhile, just five wide receivers and tight ends had receptions, leading to a challenge from Freeman to the rest of the coaching staff, per Pete Sampson of The Athletic.

“‘I have a lot of confidence in the entire wide receiver room.' – Marcus Freeman. Said he challenged the staff to rotate more moving forward,” Sampson posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Jaden Greathouse and Jordan Faison were solid in the game. Greathouse brought in eight receptions for 125 yards while Faison had six receptions for 64 yards. Third receiver Micah Gilbert brought in three receptions for 31 yards. The rest of the receptions went to tight ends and running backs, plus CJ Carr getting one reception in the game. It was a short rotation at the receiver position, something Freeman also addressed.

“Marcus Freeman asked about the short rotation at wide receiver: Said the plan was to get Mylan Graham into the game before halftime, but the drive was two-minute. Said second half deficit meant the staff wanted to keep the guys the staff ‘truly trust' to play,” Sampson added.

Meanwhile, none of the receivers brought in touchdown receptions, as the offense failed to get a touchdown in the red zone three times.

“Marcus Freeman said Notre Dame focused on a lot of red zone and two-minute situations during the bye week. Irish failed on both repeatedly against BYU, including end of half and end of game,” Sampson concluded.

The loss dropped the Irish to 6-1 on the season, but Notre Dame is still one of the top teams in the nation, and if they keep winning, they will be heading to the College Football Playoff. Next up for the Irish is a home game against Navy before they host number one Miami the following week.
