The Houston Astros enter the offseason with questions surrounding Jeremy Pena’s future and Carlos Correa’s place in their infield.

Pena enters his final season before free agency, while Correa’s return from injury adds another consideration for Houston.

Crush City Territory shared a clip Monday on X, formerly Twitter, featuring host Tyler Stafford and The Athletic’s Chandler Rome discussing the Astros’ options for reshaping their infield ahead of 2027.

“If Correa is okay playing shortstop, then you can just trade Pena. If he is not, then you have to trade both of those guys. Like you can't. You, you have to trade Pena in order to get value.”

Stafford then emphasized Pena’s potential trade return as the reason the club should move the shortstop this offseason:

“It would be malpractice for them to keep Jeremy Peña. … It would be untenable for them to keep Jeremy Pena when we've seen what you can get for a player like that.”

Could Jeremy Peña be on his way out of H-Town? 😢 @tylercstafford argues that it would be “malpractice” for the Astros not to capitalize on the 2022 World Series MVP's trade value this offseason. pic.twitter.com/LsBrlcKYRb

Pena enters his final season of arbitration eligibility with a projected $13.1 million salary and can become a free agent after 2027.

The 2022 World Series MVP hit .277 with 22 home runs and 56 RBI in 112 games this season.

Houston acquired Correa from the Minnesota Twins at the 2025 trade deadline and moved him to third base. He also filled in at shortstop during Pena’s injury absence, producing an .802 OPS in 91 plate appearances at the position.

A season-ending ankle injury in May sidelined Correa, temporarily easing the Astros’ infield logjam.

His eventual return leaves the Astros with decisions about how to arrange their defensive lineup and address Pena’s approaching free agency.

Houston finished 81-81 and lost to the Chicago White Sox in the American League Wild Card Series. The organization is also searching for a general manager and a manager.

Stafford’s comments reflect his view of how Houston should approach the offseason. The Astros have not indicated plans to trade Pena, and Correa’s position for 2027 remains unsettled.
