The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are gearing up for the 2026-27 college basketball season coming off a run to the Elite Eight, their first under head coach Niele Ivey. And there will be a familiar face around the program this season as former Notre Dame star Skylar Diggins is returning to her alma mater.
Skylar Diggins will be an outside consultant for Notre Dame, severing as a special assistant to Niele Ivey, as per Matt Fortuna of The Sports Business Journal. It’s not 100 percent clear what those duties will entail, however.
Diggins returns as one of the most decorated players in program history. During her four-year Notre Dame career, she led the Fighting Irish to two Final Four appearances and one national championship game appearance. She was a two-time Big East Player of the Year, two-time Nancy Lieberman Award winner for the nation’s best point guard, a two-time First Team All-American, a three-time All-Big East First Team selection and the 2010 Big East Freshman of the Year winner.

Following her four-year Notre Dame career, Diggins went on to become the No. 3 overall pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft by the then Tulsa Shock. The Shock eventually moved to Dallas and rebranded as the Wings, and Diggins was a part of that move. She currently plays for the Chicago Sky, but had her 2026 season cut short due to injury.
