The Pittsburgh Steelers opened the season with a victory over the Atlanta Falcons and that allowed new head coach Mike McCarthy and the team's fans to breathe a sigh of relief. The Steelers are playing their first season without Mike Tomlin on the sidelines, and that means the team's overall consistency may not be able to match what it has done in year's past.

McCarthy has some solid weapons on both sides of the line of scrimmage, with veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers and dangerous wideout DK Metcalf on offense along with linebacker  T.J. Watt and defensive end Cameron Heyward on defense. However, cornerback Joey Porter Jr. will not be in the lineup Sunday when the Steelers face New England because he has been unable to come up with a contract extension as his rookie contract comes to an end.

Steelers reporter Brooke Pryor did not think the situation between Porter and the team would disintegrate the way it has and she believes the situation is “messy.” Porter's talks with the team broke down before the season opener as he reportedly rejected the team's final offer because it did not include long-term guaranteed money.

Pryor said that Porter was one of the few Steelers players who showed up when McCarthy was introduced as the team's head coach. That was indicative of his support for McCarthy and the organization, but that has apparently broken down.

Porter wants a deal that is in the $30 million per season range and he wants the deal to include multiple seasons. Since the two sides are apparently not close to a deal, Porter has asked for a trade
