There’s a lot of gut feeling and intuition which comes from doing power rankings for the NFL after just one week of football. We all know Week 1 can be a random, with some teams treating the open to the season like an all-consuming tone setter for the rest of the year, while others tend to sleepwalk into the new year, treating it like an extension of the preseason.

The Los Angeles Rams were the consensus No. 1 team in the preseason rankings, but they’ve already suffered a pair of sobering losses to start the season. The Rams literally looked asleep after some bizarre travel plans to Australia during their Week 1 beating at the hands at the San Francisco 49ers. They fall four spots after the opening week. We’re still bullish on the Rams overall, but their ugly start against the 49ers, paired with Myles Garrett’s knee surgery have us feeling a little more shaky about their potential in the immediate future.

When it comes to the biggest risers and fallers we had some mammoth movement overall across the league.

Arizona Cardinals (+9)

It remains to be seen if this victory is a sign of Mike LaFleur transforming the Cards overnight, or if the Chargers are a much worst football team that we thought. Either way, Arizona was able to make a statement win to open the season and looked extremely good in all phases of the game.

Jacoby Brissett played fantastic football, Trey McBride keeps proving he’s the best pass catching tight end in football, and the offense even found ways to involve rookie Jeremiyah Love effectively. Meanwhile, on the defensive side we saw big games from numerous players and it made this team look much better than a cellar-dwelling tanker.

Minnesota Vikings (+8)

The story of the Vikings right now is twofold: what they do at QB moving forward after Kyler Murray’s scary concussion, and also just how incredible their defense is. Brian Flores is a wizard, and on Sunday he got the Vikes to bully the Packers in a divisional home opener, and flip the script when it came to what we thought we knew about these teams.

Offenses really struggle to attack Flores’ variable, pressure-filled system — particularly when it comes to how well he disguises pressure and baits teams by presenting gaps that are never actually there. This causes confusion, frustration, and this year Minnesota has the personnel to capitalize on it.

New York Giants (+7)

Everything is coming up roses for the start of the John Harbaugh era in East Rutherford. This team had the raw talent on paper, but the veteran coach showed that he can harness it by dominating the Cowboys on both sides of the ball.

The story moving forward will be how well Jaxson Dart can continue to play, and perhaps more-importantly, if he can stay healthy. If both those things happen we could see a very big season from the G-Men that makes a lot of noise in the NFC East.

Green Bay Packers (-8)

The Packers look and felt like a rudderless ship. It’s felt like this team has been in limbo for some years now, where they’re never getting worse — but not doing much to convince us they can become true contenders. As a result this team looks dangerous like it could become the Chargers of the NFC due to their consistent high preseason praise, only to falter when it matters.

Jordan Love was a problem against the Packers. He lost poise during the Vikings comeback, and his decision-making took a significant hit. Green Bay looked lost on offense as a result, and at some point there has to be a better element of clutch to his game.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-8)

It’s a rough week for the Bucs, who weren’t necessarily bad, but they weren’t very good either. They fell in a spot where some of the low-tier teams simply rose above them, which pushed them further than they probably deserved.

Tampa is a better team offensively than it showed against Cincinnati, and we expect they will be able to bounce back.

Los Angeles Chargers (-7) and Indianapolis Colts (-7)

The Chargers entered the season with big expectations (again), and they failed (again). Losing to the Cardinals is the most embarrassing loss of the week, but they got just a touch of grace that there could be some growing pains with Mike McDaniel as offensive coordinator.

Meanwhile for Indianapolis, well, the Colts were a mess. Daniel Jones was bad under center, the receiving corps looks like it’s really missing Michael Pittman Jr., and the defense was simply abysmal to the point the Ravens were able to throw and run all over them with impunity. There’s no shame losing to Baltimore, but there is shame in getting blown out by them.
