HBO Max enters October with enough horror to fill several Halloween marathons, but the service has more than scares lined up. New original dramas, documentaries, comedy, major movie premieres and a packed live sports calendar will keep the schedule active throughout the month.

The new British legal drama “War” leads the October 1 arrivals, The Wrap reports. Sienna Miller and Dominic West star in the series, which places two elite London law firms on opposite sides of a bitter celebrity divorce. One represents a technology mogul, while the other advocates for his famous actor wife.

That conflict provides the opening case for a story about attorneys navigating professional rivalries and personal pressure. HBO and Sky have already committed to a second season, giving the drama an opportunity to establish a larger legal world beyond its initial dispute.

Horror Classics Take Over HBO Max

Freddy Krueger becomes the unofficial face of the October library update. HBO Max will add nearly every major “A Nightmare on Elm Street” movie on the first day of the month, including the 1984 original, its 2010 remake and the crossover “Freddy vs. Jason.”

The opening day collection also features several other essential horror selections. “The Exorcist,” “The Shining,” “Poltergeist,” “House of Wax” and “Trick ’r Treat” give viewers plenty of options for a frightening movie night. “Coraline,” “ParaNorman,” “The Boxtrolls” and “Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride” offer spooky animation for audiences seeking something slightly lighter.

October will not rely entirely on older favorites. “Evil Dead Burn” arrives October 5, followed by the Lionsgate release “The Housemaid” on October 9. A24 contributes “The Death of Robin Hood” on October 16 and “The Invite” on October 23.

The month will also bring the first season of “Lanterns” to its conclusion. The DC series began its run in August and has occupied HBO’s prominent Sunday night slot throughout the early fall.
