A new agreement between the NBA and prediction markets Polymarket and Kalshi has been reached, marking a new era for the Association.
The NBA announced the agreements with Polymarket and Kalshi on Monday, Oct. 26. The agreement allows the platforms “to use official league data and intellectual property.” It also gives the league “control over what trades the companies are allowed to offer.”
Polymarket and Kalshi already offered NBA markets. However, the deals will make them the NBA's preferred prediction-market exchanges. The platforms will also be able to use league and team logos now.
Sports betting is a hot-button topic, but the latest partnership will help the NBA “identify suspicious trading” and try to prohibit insider trading.
Additionally, the NBA is expanding its agreement with DraftKings, one of the league's official sportsbook partners. The league could do the same with its deals with FanDuel, Fanatics, and others.
Some basketball fans are not happy with the latest development. One fan said, “Just stop betting at this point,” in response to Front Office Sports' report on the subject.
Another fan pointed out a potential conflict of interest, now that the NBA is officially partnering with a betting company. They wrote, “The leagues and betting companies are in bed together boy that can't mean these games aren't rigged.”
Article Continues BelowCurrently, the NFL does not have a deal with Polymarket or Kalshi. One fan wants to keep it that way, saying, “[The] NFL should not partner with anyone.”
A different X user called out the agreement, writing, “Idk about you all, but this should be illegal.” Another sarcastically said, “Oh [yeah,] this isn't a bad idea.”
Fans will have to wait and see how the NBA's deals with Polymarket and Kalshi are integrated. It appears the jury is currently out on the agreement.
