The 49-year-old ends a 21-year association with Surrey to work under Zaheer Khan at CSK ahead of IPL 2027.
Gareth Batty has stepped down as Surrey head coach to join Chennai Super Kings as assistant coach for the IPL 2027 season, ending a 21-year association with the English county. The 49-year-old will work under head coach Zaheer Khan, his former Worcestershire team-mate, as CSK continue to reshape their back-room staff.
Batty took up the Surrey head coach role in 2021 immediately after retiring from playing. During his tenure, he guided the county to three consecutive County Championship titles between 2022 and 2024. In 2025, Surrey finished runners-up to Nottinghamshire following that historic three-peat. The 2026 campaign proved considerably harder: Surrey flirted with relegation heading into the final rounds before eventually finishing seventh, and the club also failed to reach the latter stages of either the T20 Blast or the One-Day Cup.
Beyond his head coaching duties, Batty served as assistant coach at Oval Invincibles during their title-winning campaign in 2025, then joined MI London in the rebranded competition in 2026. He now moves to IPL rivals CSK as part of a sweeping overhaul of the franchise's support staff, which followed Stephen Fleming's appointment to the England Test role and the subsequent recruitment of assistants Eric Simons and James Foster.
Batty's connection with Surrey stretches back to 1998, when he first played for the club. He left in 2001 and returned in 2010, going on to serve as club captain from 2015 to 2017 before handing over to the current incumbent, Rory Burns. As a player, he took over 500 wickets across formats for Surrey and became joint-highest wicket-taker in T20 cricket. Across his entire career spanning more than two decades, Batty recorded over 1,000 wickets and more than 10,000 runs in all formats and represented England in 9 Tests, 10 ODIs and one T20I.
"Thank you hardly seems enough for all that Surrey has meant to me. It has been a privilege to serve this great club, to share in its success and challenges," Batty said as quoted by Cricinfo.
"The new journey is a very exciting one for my family and I with CSK in the IPL and I'm looking forward to getting going," Batty further said.
Why is Batty joining CSK now?
Batty's move to CSK is directly linked to the franchise's decision to rebuild its coaching structure following Stephen Fleming's departure to take up the England Test role. CSK subsequently brought in Eric Simons and James Foster as assistants, and Batty now completes that new-look support team under Zaheer Khan ahead of IPL 2027.
His immediate responsibilities at CSK will include assisting with the franchise's player retentions ahead of the November 15 deadline and contributing to planning for the mini-auction scheduled for mid-December in Goa. His experience of T20 cricket, both as a player and in franchise coaching roles with Oval Invincibles and MI London, forms the basis of his appointment.
What did Surrey say about Batty's departure?
Alec Stewart, Surrey's director of cricket, acknowledged that the expectations and traditions of English cricket's best-resourced county could be hard to live up to but praised Batty for doing just that during his long association with the club.
"I have known and worked with Gareth Batty for many years, and throughout that time he has shown outstanding commitment to the club. As a player and captain he always put the team first and played a significant role in helping to move the club forward.
"He has a passion and knowledge for the game as well as a determination to get the very best out of himself and those around him. When he made the transition into coaching, he brought those same qualities with him," Stewart highlighted.
