Toss India chose to bowl vs West Indies
Shreyas Iyer won his 14th toss in 17 matches as India captain and asked West Indies to bat first in the first T20I of the five-match series in Lucknow. In their fourth international of the tour, the visitors were yet to win a toss.
India, who had been playing with all three openers in the Asian Games in Japan under the stand-in coach VVS Laxman, went back to the extra specialist middle-order batter, leaving out Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. India's specialist bowlers were Arshdeep Singh, Mayank Yadav and Kuldeep Yadav. The allrounders were Axar Patel, Shivam Dube and the debutant Naman Dhir, who also impressed on his ODI debut earlier in the tour.
West Indies had specialist T20 firepower reinforcing the ODI squad, which lost the series 2-1. The 30-year-old right-hand opening batter Kamil Pooran made his international debut on the back of a successful CPL. West Indies went in with one more seam option than India; Shamar Joseph, Shamar Springer, Matthew Forde and Romari Shepherd. Akeal Hosein and Roston Chase were the two fingerspinners.
