In the NBA's opening game of the 2026-27 NBA season, new Boston Celtics center Mitchell Robinson suffered a quick injury scare against the Detroit Pistons. Early in the second quarter, while going for a defensive rebound over Pistons center Jalen Duren, Robinson rolled his left ankle and fell to the ground in immediate pain.

As Robinson clutched at his lower left leg, play continued after Ausar Thompson made a spinning layup over the injured Celtics big man. Seconds later, Boston head coach Joe Mazzulla called a timeout, as Robinson severely limped to the bench with the help of members of the Celtics' medical staff.

After a quick break, Robinson checked back into the game and decided to give it a go despite still being visibly in pain on the court.

Although he did record a block shortly after, Mazzulla subbed Luka Garza into the game for Robinson, who did not go back to the locker room.
