Missy Elliott is bringing the heat back home to Virginia, and this time, HBCU bands are taking center stage. The hip-hop icon is set to bring “Missy Elliott Presents HBCU Band Battle” to Norfolk State University, turning William “Dick” Price Stadium into a showcase of the sound, showmanship, and culture that have made HBCU marching bands legendary.

According to event organizers, the inaugural showcase will feature four HBCU marching bands from Virginia and neighboring North Carolina: Norfolk State University’s Spartan Legion, Hampton University’s Marching Force, Virginia State University’s Trojan Explosion, and Elizabeth City State University’s Sound of Class.

“Virginia will always be home, so bringing something like this back means a lot to me,” Elliott said in the event announcement. “HBCU bands have always brought so much energy, creativity, and culture to music. I want this to be a celebration of them and something that inspires the next generation to dream even bigger.”

For Elliott, bringing the event to the 757 is a homecoming.

Born Melissa Arnette Elliott in Portsmouth, Virginia, Elliott has become one of the most influential figures in hip-hop and R&B. Her career as a rapper, songwriter, and producer helped reshape popular music, while her longtime collaborations with fellow Virginia producer Timbaland contributed to a distinctive sound that helped draw national attention to the talent coming out of Virginia.

Virginia’s musical footprint extends well beyond Elliott. Timbaland and Virginia Beach native Pharrell Williams are among the artists and producers who helped establish the Commonwealth—and particularly the 757—as an important source of innovation in hip-hop, R&B, and popular music.

Elliott’s connection to her home state has also been formally recognized. On Oct. 17, 2022, then-Governor Glenn Youngkin officially recognized Missy Elliott Day in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The proclamation came as Elliott’s hometown of Portsmouth honored her with a street bearing her name, Missy Elliott Boulevard.

The HBCU Band Battle also builds on Elliott’s relationship with Norfolk State University. In December 2022, Elliott served as keynote speaker for Norfolk State’s 109th commencement ceremony. The university awarded her an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree and its Commencement Presidential Medallion. Elliott also donated $20,000 to Norfolk State after her address.

Now, she is returning to the university with an event designed to put HBCU musicians in the spotlight. The inaugural Missy Elliott Presents HBCU Band Battle is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026, at 4 p.m. at William “Dick” Price Stadium on Norfolk State’s campus, according to event information.

Tickets and additional information are available through the official HBCU Band Battle website.
