Saturday saw several major upsets across the HBCU landscape, but none of them were more impressive than Mississippi Valley State's come-from-behind upset victory over Prairie View A&M.
Mississippi Valley State has struggled mightily to start the season, with their lone win coming against Division II competitor Lincoln University of Pennsylvania. And in the matchup against Prairie View A&M, they were down 24-7 heading into halftime. But the Delta Devils orchestrated a 21-3 second-half scoring advantage and ultimately seized the lead when Josh Brown found Caleb Brownlow for a 35-yard touchdown to even the score at 27-27, before Luka Sari drilled the PAT to put them up 28-27.
Prairie View A&M's offense looked different than it did in the season's first few games. It's Tevin Carter, who last week threw for 160 yards and two touchdowns on 18 of 22 passing, and this week only threw for 62 yards and one touchdown with one interception on 15 of 23 passing. But Carter had his second-best rushing game of the season, rushing for 94 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries, including a 40-yard scamper. Carter scored both touchdowns in the second quarter, helping Prairie View A&M pad their lead to 24-0 early in the half.

Although Brown threw for 144 yards and one touchdown on 13 of 25 attempts, he rushed for 101 yards on 17 carries and secured three touchdowns. Brown ultimately scored three straight touchdowns for Mississippi Valley State to help them get back in the game, including the first score of the game for the Delta Devils, a 9-yard touchdown run that put them on the board, 24-7. In the third quarter, he scored again on a 13-yard run to make it 24-14. Then he pulled off a 62-yard run at the start of the fourth quarter to put Mississippi Valley State within three, 24-21.
Prairie View A&M now drops to 2-4 on the season and 2-1 in the SWAC, with a battle against Marshall Faulk and Southern University on tap for next week. Meanwhile, Mississippi Valley State continues its battle with SWAC West contenders as it faces Texas Southern.
