Miami is set to visit an 11th-ranked Notre Dame on Saturday. As the team prepares for its toughest matchup of the season, it will be without Malachi Toney. Toney will need surgery for an ankle injury.

Now, the extent of the surgery is known, as is a possible timeline for his return, according to Pete Nakos of On 3.

The Miami wide receiver will undergo tightrope surgery on Thursday, with a typical recovery of four to six weeks. It is the same surgery that Tua Tagovailoa and Brock Bowers underwent when in college. Both of them returned in roughly one month.

Toney has been a major part of the offense this season. He has brought in 73 receptions this year for 1,027 yards and 13 touchdowns already this year. He was on pace to shatter the marks he set during his breakout freshman campaign. Last year, he hauled in 109 receptions for 1,211 yards and ten touchdowns.

If Toney is out for just one month, he would miss the rest of the regular season, with the final regular-season game set for November 28 against Boston College. The ACC Championship is set for December 5. Assuming Miami is playing in that game, it would be an aggressive timeline to get Toney back in the lineup for that game. Still, the first round of the College Football Playoffs is set to begin on December 18. That would give Toney six weeks to recover from surgery. Further, if Miami can win the ACC and secure a bye into the quarterfinals, he would have nearly two months of recovery.

Miami is set to visit Notre Dame Saturday in South Bend, with kickoff set for 7:30 pm ET.
