Southern University head coach Marshall Faulk believes Saturday's loss to Jackson State reflects who the program is right now. Faulk was unhappy after the team's 35-17 loss to Jackson State in the Boombox Classic on Saturday.

In post-game comments, he says that the loss defines who the team is right now.

My team deserves better than that for me to judge the team right now through that lens. I want to watch the tape, and then next week I'll give you guys the truthful answer. Right now, I'm emotional, and they're emotional. I just know that we're better than what we did today, but if we continue to come out and be inconsistent, that becomes who we are, and that's who we are right now.”
Jackson State jumped out to a 21-3 lead early in the second quarter after two touchdown runs by Nate Blunt, the fourth, and a 70-yard touchdown pass from Jared Lockhart to Nate Rimbert. Southern University looked to ultimately make the game closer, relying on their running back duo of Trey Holly and Mike Franklin.
Holly broke through for a 6-yard touchdown in the middle of the second quarter to make it 21-9. After Jared Lockhart ran in a 1-yard touchdown late in the second quarter to make it 28-9, Mike Franklin broke through for another touchdown late in the third quarter. Holly ran in for a successful 2-point conversion following the score to make it 28-17, but ultimately, the Jaguars were not able to mount a comeback.
Southern now turns their sights to homecoming as it hosts the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
