As the Seattle Mariners conclude a brutal 2026 season, there are expected changes to be made when it comes to main figureheads within the ball club. While the Mariners went through a disastrous season, fans can expect manager Dan Wilson to be fired, but what about president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto?

According to MLB insider Bob Nightengale at USA Today, Wilson is the expected scapegoat for Seattle's ultra-disappointing season, even to the point where he could be let go as “early as Monday.” However, Dipoto “doesn't appear to be in jeopardy of being fired.”

“While manager Dan Wilson will be blamed for the Seattle Mariners’ embarrassing season and is expected to pay the price by being fired as early as Monday, Jerry Dipoto, the Mariners’ president of baseball operations, is under heavy scrutiny,” Nightengale wrote.

“Dipoto doesn’t appear to be in jeopardy of being fired, but critics point out that the Mariners have reached the postseason just twice in his 11-year tenure, and veteran catcher Cal Raleigh went public about the Mariners’ cultural woes,” Nightengale continued.

After the Mariners finished the regular season with a 7-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels, the team ended with a 76-86 record, putting them third in the AL West, a season removed after winning the division and going all the way to the ALCS. If Seattle continues its path of not making the playoffs, the “fingers will be pointed directly at Dipoto.”

“If the Mariners don’t reach the postseason next year, those fingers will be pointed directly at Dipoto,” Nightengale wrote.

At any rate, it remains to be seen what changes Seattle makes this offseason to boost its playoff chances in 2027.
