The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost their starting quarterback in the closing minutes of the 23-16 Week 3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. After attempting to make some magic happen on a play, Baker Mayfield sustained an injury to his throwing hand, which was evidentially very painful.
In the replay, it appears the 31-year-old quarterback's right thumb was struck by Vikings linebacker Blake Cashman, who was attempting to block the pass. It's not entirely clear how severe the injury is at this time.
The injury was clearly incredibly painful for Mayfield, as he was heard screaming in pain while trainers surrounded him on the field, according to Jenna Laine of ESPN. His teammates surrounded him and took a knee while trainers attended to Mayfield's right hand.
“Baker Mayfield is now walking off the field and holding his thumb. He was screaming in pain,” Laine reported.
