As the NBA season is set to tip off, New Orleans Pelicans star Zion Williamson plans to expand his game significantly. Williamson is known for relentlessly attacking the basket and being an above-the-rim standout, but the former No. 1 pick wants to expand his game by shooting more 3-pointers.
In the latest edition of The Stein Line, Marc Stein said that he gathered information about Williamson's desire to shoot more threes.
“Something else I gleaned when the Pelicans visited Dallas on Wednesday night: Zion Williamson wants to incorporate more of the 3-ball into his game. Williamson took only four 3s last season — total. But I watched him work on it pregame Wednesday and then launch four (albeit without a make) in the Pelicans' preseason finale against Washington.”
Stein ultimately balls down Williamson, hoping he can improve his game this way to boost the team's postseason chances.
“What the 26-year-old really wants, of course, is a ticket to the postseason. Entering his eighth season, Williamson is one of only two No. 1 picks in modern NBA history (alongside Anthony Bennett) with at least two seasons of NBA experience to have never appeared in a playoff game.”
Article Continues BelowOver his career, Williamson has shot 32% from the three-point range on limited attempts. He's only attempted 102 three-pointers in his career, ultimately making 33 of them. He made the most three-pointers in the 2020-2021 season, when he drained 10 of 34 attempts for a 29.4% clip.
Still, a consistent 3-point game could make Williamson a dangerous offensive threat. Last season, he averaged 21 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1 steal while shooting 60% from the field. Developing his three-point game could raise the ceiling for a Pelicans team looking for playoff success this season.
