The Toronto Maple Leafs are off to a good start in 2026-27. After swinging the Kirill Marchenko trade, they scored the very first goal of the 2026-27 NHL season. However, the news isn't all good, thanks to recent developments with defenseman Jake McCabe.
McCabe exited the game against Montreal in the first period on Tuesday night. The Maple Leafs defender appeared to be in pain after a skate connected near his ankle. It's unknown exactly why he left the game at this time, however.
McCabe is entering his fourth full season with the Maple Leafs, and his 14th season in the NHL. The veteran defenseman joined Toronto in 2022-23 through a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks. Last season, he played 80 games, scoring five goals and 25 points.
