Prior to today’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Phillies reinstated left-handed pitcher Jesús Luzardo from the 15-day injured list. To make room on the 28-man roster, right-handed pitcher José Urquidy was designated for assignment.

Luzardo, 28, went 14-5 with a 2.87 ERA (57 ER, 178.2 IP), 221 strikeouts to 52 walks and a 1.08 WHIP over 29 starts with the Phillies before being placed on the injured list with left shoulder inflammation on Sept. 15 (retro to 9/12). He was named National League Pitcher of the Month for August after he went 3-0 with a major league-best 1.31 ERA (5 ER, 34.1 IP). Luzardo, a first-time All-Star this season, has earned 6.3 bWAR, which ranks second among all National League pitchers, behind only teammate Cristopher Sánchez. His 221 strikeouts this year are a new career high, and Luzardo has now recorded consecutive 200-strikeout seasons for the first time in his career after previously setting a season high with 216 in last year’s campaign.
Originally selected by the Washington Nationals in the third round of the 2016 MLB Draft, Luzardo was acquired by the Phillies from the Miami Marlins on Dec. 22, 2024, and was signed to a five-year contract extension on March 10 of this year.
Urquidy, 31, pitched to a 3.68 ERA (3 ER, 7.1 IP) with nine strikeouts and no walks in two appearances with the Phillies after being claimed off waivers from the Chicago White Sox on Sept. 17. A native of Mazatlan, Mexico, Urquidy was originally signed by the Houston Astros as an amateur free agent on March 2, 2015.
