Monday Night Football was the McCaffrey Bowl as brothers Christian and Luke McCaffrey went up against one another. Christian wound up being the star of the game as he had 117 total yards and two touchdowns to help the 49ers get the 23-17 win over Luke's Washington Commander's.
After the game, the brothers posed for a cool jersey exchange and hug.
Early on, the game looked like it was going to be a blowout as the 49ers built up a 20-3 halftime lead thanks to two first-half Christian McCaffrey touchdowns. But the Commanders fought back in the second half and very nearly tied the game late.
However, it could have been very different had Luke McCaffrey touched the ball in a potential special teams fiasco during the start of the fourth quarter. If he did, the 49ers would have had the ball near the red zone. But replays showed he did not touch the ball, so the Commanders were able to keep possession.
Despite missing star receiver Terry McLaurin to a knee injury early, the Commanders were able to mount a second-half comeback. Jayden Daniels relied on Chig Okonkwo and Treylon Burks in McLaurin's absence, and they delivered with 11 catches for 135 yards. Stefon Diggs also did his part with a touchdown, his fourth of the season.
The Commanders fell just short in the end, though, as they dropped to 1-4-1 on the season. Meanwhile, the 49ers maintained their 100% record on the season. They will put that perfect 6-0 mark on the line next week away to the Atlanta Falcons.
