Lane Kiffin thought he had prepared himself for Saturday night. Instead, the LSU coach walked back into Vaught-Hemingway Stadium for the first time since leaving Ole Miss and found the whole thing harder to process than he anticipated, a night that ended with a 32-24 loss to his former program.

“Probably not what I would have thought. It was just a lot, you know, coming in, and I'm sure that'll be criticized, whatever, but there's a lot of stuff,” Kiffin told reporters after the game. “Six years here and a lot of things and a lot of life-changing experiences and a lot of really good people that helped me through some really hard times.”

He had expected to lock into the competition and let the rest fade. “I just thought it probably more in like the competitive mode, and just kind of embrace it, and it was just a little bit, I don't know, sometimes you can't predict your emotions,” Kiffin said. “I know that sometimes I don't act like it, but I got it. I'm a human too.”

Then came the part few expected from him. “I'll just close up saying congrats to those guys. They played really well. They deserve to win,” Kiffin said. “I know it sounds weird, as much as I dislike the losing, whatever, there is a part in there of, you know, a lot of those coaches and players, and I wouldn't say excited, but I'm glad for them.”

The reception was as hostile as advertised. Kiffin was booed on arrival and waved at the crowd on his way in, a fitting bookend to a departure that saw Ole Miss fans jeer him at the airport. He informed athletic director Keith Carter on November 29 that he was leaving for LSU, then was denied his request to coach the Rebels through the College Football Playoff.

The game itself got away early. Ole Miss led 24-7 at halftime behind Trinidad Chambliss, who threw for 363 yards and two scores. LSU clawed back within eight, but Sam Leavitt's fourth-and-goal pass from the 6 was tipped by Kam Franklin and intercepted by Jaylon Braxton with 1:03 remaining.

LSU falls to 2-1 and 0-1 in SEC play. Texas A&M looms in two weeks.
