The 2026 NFL season is starting to take shape now that three weeks are already in the books. Detroit and Carolina are two teams that are moving in opposite directions headed into Week 4. The Lions have lived up to expectations, beating inferior opponents while getting smoked by the Bills in Week 2. Meanwhile, the Panthers have been a disappointment after starting the season 1-2.
That puts both teams in completely different positions ahead of Sunday Night Football. The Lions will be expected to win this game despite going on the road in a big spot. But the Panthers are now a cornered animal and need to get a win to save their season.
So which team will come out on top in this one? And which players should fans have their eyes on ahead of this NFC showdown?
Here are three bold predictions before the Lions and Panthers square off on Sunday Night Football in Week 4.

The only time that Goff seems to be the center of attention in Detroit is when everything is going wrong. But he is flying under the radar as one of the league's best quarterbacks this season.
Through three games, Goff has 802 passing yards with eight touchdowns and zero interceptions. He also boasts an impressive 116.1 passer rating, the best of his career up until this point. Detroit's offense has thrived as a result, scoring over 30 points per game.
Primetime games have a unique energy and can often be hotly contested. In those situations, the team with a better quarterback often comes out on top. That is exactly what Lions fans should expect in Week 4.
Goff will finish this game with more passing yards than Young. To put an exactly number on it, we'll say Goff needs at least 275 passing yards.
But more impressively, he will continue his streak of consecutive games without throwing an interception.
Jahmyr Gibbs rushes for over 200 yards, doubles up Panthers running game
The Lions have featured Gibbs as the most important player in their offense so far this season.
On some level, this has always been true. But Detroit has never given their superstar running back such a huge workload in the past. To his credit, Gibbs has more than excelled in a high-volume role.
Jahmyr enters Week 4 with 65 carries for 307 rushing yards and four touchdowns. He also adds 18 receptions for 156 receiving yards and two touchdowns through the air. That means Gibbs is averaging over 150 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns per game.
That should be a terrifying prospect for Panthers fans who have seen their run defense get gashed repeatedly this season.
Carolina has allowed 193.3 rushing yards per game to start the season. It is important to note that Chicago ran up the average in Week 1, piling up 291 rushing yards. But that average won't get any better after Detroit runs all over Carolina.
Gibbs will have his best game of the season against the Panthers. And that is really saying something considering the hot streak Gibbs is on through three games.
To be specific, Gibbs will finish this game with at least 200 yards from scrimmage. He will also score at least two touchdowns. But this alone may not be a bold enough prediction for the best running back in the NFL.
On top of that, Jahmyr will double up the rushing total of the entire Panthers team in Week 4.
This is a tough ask for any NFL player. But Gibbs has proven that he is up for the challenge.
Lions defense finally has a good game, leading to 10-point victory over Panthers
Detroit's defense has been the worst unit in the entire NFL through just three weeks. And they aren't the team in this matchup that gave up 59 points in Week 1.
The Lions rank at the bottom of basically every defensive statistic at this point in the season. They rank dead last in both points allowed per game (31.7) and yards allowed per game (299.3). If Detroit's offense weren't so good, they would have certainly lost more than one game by now.
But the Lions have excelled in some areas. They rank 2nd in the NFL in sacks through three weeks with 12. That shouldn't be too surprising as Detroit loves to send an all out blitz.
Carolina should be worried about Detroit exploiting that matchup in Week 4.
The Panthers are now without guard Damien Lewis, who went down with an injury on Sunday. His long-term prognosis is still unclear, but he definitely won't be playing against the Lions.
Lewis is Carolina's best offensive lineman and his absence could be a big problem. This is especially true with Ikem Ekwonu, Taylor Moton, and Brady Christensen already out of the lineup. That puts a lot of pressure on Carolina to come up with a game plan designed to stop Aidan Hutchinson. But there's no guarantee it will work.
The Lions will finally have a good defensive performance in this one. They will not allow over 325 total yards of offense and will force at least two turnovers.
