The Detroit Lions pulled off a feat that no other team has accomplish yet this season. Detroit defeated an unbeaten Minnesota team 19-15 in a wild game at Ford Field. The Lions pulled out one incredible trick play in a crucial moment that had Tom Brady cheering from inside the booth.
Lions offensive coordinator Drew Petzing dialed up an incredible trick play on Sunday that worked to perfection.
Detroit lined up for a crucial third-and-8 with just over five minutes left in the third quarter with the score close at 7-6. The Lions were lined up at the Vikings' 40-yard line, but had Amon-Ra St. Brown start the play all the way back at his own 45-yard line.
Lions QB Jared Goff snapped the ball and immediately threw a horizontal pass. St. Brown had already built up a head of steam before catching it at the Minnesota 45-yard line. He knifed through the defense and gained the huge first down.
Brady could not believe what he was seeing as the Fox analyst on the game. And clearly neither could the vaunted Vikings defense.
Petzing seemingly took inspiration from Northwestern offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, the innovative offensive play caller. Kelly has integrated a number of bizarre alignments inspired by the Canadian Football League in his Wildcats offense. Those plays include lining players up several yards off the line of scrimmage, just like they do in the CFL.

In addition to that incredible trick play, Petzing also deployed multiple tight ends off the line of scrimmage several times throughout the game. It yielded results too, creating running lanes for Jahmyr Gibbs that were difficult to find in the first half.
Unfortunately, it was not all fun and games in Detroit. Linebacker Jack Campbell was taken to the hospital after suffering a rough neck injury in the second half. Hopefully he makes a fully recovery, though it is unclear if that could happen in time for Detroit's next matchup.
Next up for the Lions is a Week 9 road game against the Dolphins.
