Walsall manager Lee Grant is a contender to replace Paul Heckingbottom as Preston manager, talkSPORT understands.
Grant is part of a whittled-down shortlist that initially included 50 different potential successors at Deepdale.
Heckingbottom was dismissed last week just six games into the Championship season, with his side winning just one.
Premier League cult hero Jason Euell has taken interim charge, but Preston have been on the lookout for a new boss.
And it appears Grant is a strong candidate to take over.
Ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Grant only took his second managerial job in May when he was named Walsall manager.
He has taken charge of eight games so far with the Saddlers, going unbeaten in League Two so far this season.
Before joining Walsall, the 43-year-old spent eight months in charge of Huddersfield Town, being sacked in January of this year.
Of his 36 games in the dugout for the Terriers, he won 17.

talkSPORT understands that Robbie Keane, who left Hungarian side Ferencvaros in May, is appreciated by the club.
Meanwhile, Bradford City manager Graham Alexander is understood to be open to the role.
Other free agents in the manager market include Scott Parker, Sean Dyche and Steven Gerrard.
However, the three former Premier League bosses are not in contention to replace Heckingbottom.

In his first game in charge of Preston away at Queens Park Rangers, the Lilywhites took the lead after just 20 seconds.
Johnny Kenny netted in the opening minutes before going on to score a second after 26 minutes.
It meant that Euell's side headed into half time 2-0 up, with QPR also going down to 10 men.
Three points on Saturday afternoon would be only their second win of the season so far.
