Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Doncic confronted a fan who threw a basketball at a female referee during Wednesday's 116-103 victory over the Sacramento Kings. The heated exchange came during another dominant performance from Doncic, who made NBA history with his latest 40-point outing.
The incident unfolded at Golden 1 Center with 2:35 remaining in the third quarter. After the ball went out of bounds, a spectator retrieved it and forcefully threw it toward referee Chelisa Painter, striking her arm.
Doncic immediately confronted the spectator, appearing to ask, “What the f**k are you doing?” The exchange was captured in a video shared by Fullcourtpass on X.
The Lakers guard then alerted officials and arena security, who approached the spectator and escorted him from his courtside seat. Play briefly stopped before the game resumed without further incident.
Doncic later explained his reaction during his postgame media availability.
“He just tossed it really strong, the ball, toward the ref,” Doncic said. “I just asked him what the hell he's doing.”
The confrontation offered an unusual contrast to Doncic's previous disagreements with officials. Earlier this year, Lakers coach JJ Redick defended Doncic's competitive intensity amid scrutiny of his interactions with referees.
On Wednesday, however, the Slovenian star was defending an official rather than disputing a call.
Doncic finished with 40 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, helping Los Angeles improve to 7-2. It marked his third consecutive 40-point performance.
While his scoring brilliance continued making headlines, Doncic's willingness to confront the spectator provided another memorable moment from the Lakers' victory.
