The Seattle Kraken have finally traded 22-year-old center Shane Wright after months of continuous rumors. The Kraken completed a one-for-one trade with the Nashville Predators in exchange for 21-year-old winger Matthew Wood, giving both former first-round picks a fresh start, per a post on X by Frank Seravalli.

Wright, selected fourth overall in the 2022 NHL Draft, had already requested a move away from Seattle during the summer. He leaves with three goals and four points in 14 games this season, a decline from the 12 goals and 27 points in 74 appearances last season. Across 182 NHL regular-season games, he recorded 39 goals and 82 points and never reached the playoffs with Seattle.

Initially viewed as a two-way center who could complement Matthew Beniers, Wright gradually lost his place. Nashville is betting that a change of environment can revive that development while addressing its need for center depth.

Seattle, meanwhile, acquires a bigger winger in Wood, the 15th overall selection in the 2023 draft. Wood scored 17 goals and 30 points in 71 games during his first full NHL season in 2025-26, but has managed only one goal and three points in 14 games this season. Both players are in the final year of their entry-level contracts and are scheduled to become restricted free agents in summer 2027.

Nashville's acquisition also fits a broader effort to reshape its roster around younger talent, particularly after moving away from winger Luke Evangelista during the offseason. Ultimately, this is a one-for-one exchange of two former first-round picks whose development has stalled.

Both players will hope that they can rediscover the form that initially made them highly-touted prospects at their new teams.
